Why Is My Grass Dying? Easy Ways to Make Your Lawn Green Again

Have you ever looked at your grass and noticed brown spots? Maybe your whole lawn looks sad and crunchy instead of soft and green? Don’t worry! Your grass is trying to tell you something, and we can help fix it.
What Makes Grass Turn Brown?
Think of grass like a pet. Just like a dog needs food, water, and love, grass needs special things to stay healthy and green. When grass doesn’t get what it needs, it turns brown and looks sick.
Let’s find out what might be making your grass unhappy!
Problem #1: Not Enough Water
What it looks like: The grass feels crunchy when you walk on it. It might look gray or tan colored. When you step on it, your footprints stay there instead of bouncing back up.
Why it happens: Grass is really thirsty! Just like you need to drink water every day, grass needs water too. In hot places like Whittier, California, the sun is very strong and can dry out your grass quickly.
How to fix it:
∙ Water your grass early in the morning before it gets hot outside (around 6 or 7 AM is perfect)
∙ Give your grass a long drink 2-3 times each week instead of a tiny bit every day
∙ Water for about 20-30 minutes so the water goes deep into the ground
∙ Stick your finger in the dirt - if it feels dry two inches down, your grass needs water
Easy trick: Put an empty tuna can on your lawn when you water. When it fills up with one inch of water, you’ve watered enough!
Problem #2: Too Much Water
What it looks like: The grass is squishy and wet. You might see mushrooms growing. The grass might smell bad or look slimy. Some grass might even pull up easily like pulling hair.
Why it happens: Yes, grass can get too much water! When grass gets too wet, its roots can’t breathe. It’s like if you tried to breathe underwater - you can’t do it!
How to fix it:
∙ Water less often - try once or twice a week instead of every day
∙ Make sure water isn’t pooling (making puddles) on your lawn
∙ Let the grass dry out between watering times
∙ Check if your sprinklers are watering the same spot too many times
Problem #3: Cutting Grass Too Short
What it looks like: The grass looks like a buzz cut that went wrong. You can see dirt between the grass. The brown parts are where you mowed.
Why it happens: When you cut grass too short, it’s like giving it a really bad haircut. The grass gets stressed out and can’t make food from the sun anymore.
How to fix it:
∙ Keep your lawn mower blades high - grass should be about 3 inches tall (as long as a crayon)
∙ Never cut more than one-third of the grass height at one time
∙ Sharp mower blades are better than dull ones (ask a grown-up to help with this)
∙ Leave grass a bit longer in summer to protect roots from hot sun
Problem #4: Not Enough Food (Fertilizer)
What it looks like: The grass is light green or yellow, not dark green. It grows slowly. Some patches look better than others.
Why it happens: Grass needs food to grow, just like you need food to grow big and strong. The food for grass is called fertilizer.
How to fix it:
∙ Buy grass fertilizer from a garden store (ask for one that’s good for your type of grass)
∙ Feed your grass in spring and fall
∙ Follow the directions on the bag - too much food can hurt grass too!
∙ Water the grass after you feed it
Remember: A little bit of fertilizer goes a long way. More is not better!
Problem #5: Dog Pee Spots
What it looks like: Round brown or yellow circles, usually with super green grass around the edges.
Why it happens: Dog pee has chemicals in it that are too strong for grass. It burns the grass like when you spill something hot.
How to fix it:
∙ Pour lots of water on the spot right after your dog goes potty
∙ Train your dog to use one area of the yard (make a special potty spot with mulch)
∙ Plant tough grass seed in those spots
∙ Give your dog more water to drink (this makes pee less strong)
Problem #6: Bugs Eating Your Grass
What it looks like: Brown patches that get bigger. The grass might pull up easily like a rug. You might see little white worms (grubs) in the dirt.
Why it happens: Tiny bugs live in the dirt and eat grass roots. The grass can’t drink water without healthy roots.
How to fix it:
∙ Pull up some brown grass and look for white C-shaped bugs in the dirt
∙ Buy “grub control” from a garden store
∙ Put it on your lawn in late spring or early summer
∙ Water it in really well
∙ Birds eating your grass? That’s actually good - they’re eating the bugs!
Problem #7: Too Much Shade
What it looks like: Grass under trees or next to your house looks thin and sad. It’s brown or very light green.
Why it happens: Grass is like a solar panel - it needs sunshine to make energy and grow. In shady spots, grass can’t get enough sun.
How to fix it:
∙ Trim tree branches to let more light through (ask a grown-up for help)
∙ Plant shade-loving grass seeds in shady areas
∙ Or plant something else there instead of grass - like pretty shade plants or put down wood chips
∙ Accept that shady grass will never be as thick as sunny grass
Problem #8: Walking on Grass Too Much
What it looks like: Brown paths where people walk a lot. The dirt is packed down hard.
Why it happens: When lots of people walk on the same spot, the dirt gets squished tight. Grass roots can’t grow in hard dirt, and water can’t soak in.
How to fix it:
∙ Make a real path with stepping stones where people like to walk
∙ Poke holes in hard dirt with a garden fork to let air in
∙ Add new dirt on top of hard spots
∙ Plant new grass seed
∙ Keep people off that area until new grass grows strong
Quick Check: Is Your Grass Dead or Just Sleeping?
Pull on some brown grass. If it comes out easily with no roots, it’s dead. If it stays in the ground, it might just be sleeping (dormant) and could come back!
